Parent Involvement Judging Resources / Handbook / Fundraising
  • Debate offers parents a unique opportunity for involvement in a school activity. Usually, parents turn out to watch athletic events and artistic performances, but in debate, they have the chance to become active participants by serving as judges. Judges do not need to have special expertise they just need to be good listeners and to declare who offered them the best argument. Coaches inevitably recruit judges from family members, friends, former debaters, teachers, administrators, etc., but in many programs, parents form the backbone of the judging pool.
  • Short training opportunities occur each year at the Talkathon and at certain tournaments. The coach and team greatly appreciate your interest and willingness to volunteer. A training video is also available for your use at any time. After your first round, you’ll find it easy, fun and interesting!
  • Parents who don't wish to serve as judges can be involved in other ways. They can provide transportation and /or meals when tournaments are underway, and as chaperones during overnight trips. They can volunteer to operate the concession stand as an easy fundraiser, or attend freshman orientation with some team members for recruitment! Parents are always welcome and always a source of moral support for their children and their friends!
  • Pick up a “Volunteer Packet” at the main office of your child’s school to get started. In the Debate Handbook you will find many more useful tips and ways to be involved. Often, parents value debate not simply because of the benefits it provides their children, but because of the opportunity it offers them to become personally involved, in a supportive way, with their children's education. And, sometimes, too, parents form lasting friendships as a result of the activity.
