Course Description

Strength Training & Conditioning Advanced is a co-ed physical education course for both athletes and non-athletes, which is an extension of Strength Training & Conditioning.  The course focus is on strength training which includes instruction in advanced lifts & principles of strength training and conditioning for personal fitness and development. Students will be provided quality workout opportunity based upon the strength training principles taught.  The student will implement workouts based on sound principles and personal needs. Topics, which may be explored, include systematic weight training, speed & agility training, plyometric (explosion) training, nutrition, body composition, steroids, and other related topics. Ongoing tests and measurements of fitness, strength, & conditioning, as a means of evaluating progress, will be part of this course.  Prerequisite for this course is the satisfactory completion of Strength Training & Conditioning.

 

Class & Conduct Expectations

      1.     Attend, be on time, dress appropriately, and perform to the best of your abilities everyday.

      2.     Treat ALL class members and staff with courtesy and respect.

      3.     Physical and/or verbal abuse and profanity are NOT acceptable at anytime.

      4.     Follow safety guidelines throughout the activity.

      5.     Respect and care for all equipment and facilities.

      6.     BHS rules and policies will be enforced.

      7.     NO food or drinks are allowed in the Physical Education areas except water.

      8.     Only students registered in class will be allowed in the activity areas during class.

 

What is the objective of Strength Training & Conditioning class?

The objective of “Strength Training and Conditioning Advanced” is to provide instruction and practice in advanced principles of strength training & conditioning.  It is the goal of the course to provide the student with information so they may continue strength training for personal fitness throughout life.  The core activities for this course are strength training and conditioning workouts.

 

What is the general structure of Strength Training & Conditioning class?

Strength Training & Conditioning Workout                                               3 days per week minimum

Plyometrics (Explosion Training), Lecture, or Other Activities                   1 day each week possible

Lockers

Athletes will use their large sport locker during their season.  Others will be assigned a locker in the physical education area.  

Each student will be assigned a small locker that is not to be shared.  Any damage to your assigned locker is your responsibility.  Report any damage to your teacher immediately.  Do not share your combination with any other student.  Long, skinny lockers are to be used for locking up your bags, coats, and any other personal items you bring into the locker room during your period only.   Do not leave your lock on any big locker after your class. Before you leave the locker room put all your belongings back into your small assigned locker.

 

Dress

ALL students are required to wear acceptable physical education clothing for class.  In order to fully participate, proper clothing is necessary.  The clothing MUST be a change of athletic clothing different than your daily school clothing.  This may include sweat pants, sweatshirt, t-shirt, gym shorts, and athletic shoes which are conducive to running, activity, and the school facilities.   Be prepared to go outside when the temperature is 40 degrees (F) and above.  All clothing must be non-offensive, appropriate, and acceptable to the instructor.  It should be clean and fully intact, while appropriately covering the body.  Do NOT wear BHS athletic team uniforms and warm-ups for class, though school colors are encouraged.  Proper dress will be part the grading process and failure to dress in acceptable clothing will affect your grade.

Grading & Evaluation

Grading and evaluation is a points system based upon the following criteria:

      Daily Points & Written Work (Workout Records, Testing, etc)………………………………….. 60%

      Physical Testing & Evaluations…………………………………………………………………….. 30%

      Subjective Evaluation by the Instructor……………………………………………………………. 10%

 

Daily Points

Each day the class meets the student may earn FIVE (10) points.  The points are distributed for attendance, participation, dress, conduct, and sportsmanship.   Points will be deducted for the following reasons:

      Excused Absence (May be made-up) ..............................................……………………….....                 -10 pts

      Unexcused Absence (May NOT be made-up & Automatic Grade Reduction) ……………                       -10 pts

      Unexcused Tardy & Inappropriate Dress............……………………….………………….…….                      -2 pts.

      Poor Participation, Conduct, & Sportsmanship..…………………………..………………..…….                 -1 to -10 pts.

 

Major Grade Reductions ** Four “Non-Suits”,Four unexcused tardies, or Four unexcused absences will result in a grade reduction of one letter grade for the semester. (Example:  Grade reduced from an “A” to an “B".)  IT IS THE STUDENT’S RESPONSIBILITY to clear any unexcused absence or tardy and present the clearance slip to the instructor!!

 

Make-up ** A students who needs to make-up a class period due to an excused absence MUST complete a “PE Make-Up Activity Sheet” to earn the points they have missed in class. The “PE Make-UP Activity Sheets” can be found on the bulletin board in the weight room or in the locker room.
