COURSE DESCRIPTION
This course is designed to
prepare students for lifelong decision-making and problem-solving skills
related to health and wellness issues impacting individuals and families. The
primary emphasis is on enabling students to assume an active role in developing
healthy lifestyles. The curriculum includes the following: mental health and
wellness, alcohol and drug education, diseases and body systems,
cardiopulmonary resuscitation, human sexuality, social and personal
responsibility and accessing community health resources.

B- = 80-81% C+ = 78-79% C = 72-77% C-

D+ = 68-69% D = 60% F = 59% and below
CLASSROOM RULES
·
Each day bring a
working pen, notebook paper and binder to class.
·
Follow school
attendance policy (see attached).
·
Take care of personal
needs outside of class time:
o If you need to use the rest room, ask for the
teacher’s permission and sign out and back in on the “out of class” sheet
provided. Use only the rest room facilities on the first floor on the Westside
of the school and do not wander the
halls, use vending machines, visit students in other classes, make cell phone
calls or go to your car.

Listen respectfully
when the teacher or fellow class member is presenting.
·
Water Only! No food
allowed in the classroom.
·
Be respectful of all
classroom equipment and supplies.
·
Remove any distractions
from your table top.
o Cell phones
are to be turned off and put away during class time.
§
If your cell phone goes
off the first time the teacher will take it and return it after class to you. A
second time = phone will be given to your Vice-Principal who will meet with you
after school.
o Music
devices are to be turned off & put away in classroom & computer labs.
§
If your music device is
in use during class time the teacher will take it and return it after class to
you. A second time = removal and
given to your Vice-Principal who will meet with you after school.
o Do not use
class time to work on assignments from other classes.
§
Unless you have
completed the work assigned and have permission of the teacher.
o Do not use
class time to write personal notes.
§
Notes will be taken by
the teacher, read and not returned. Administrators may be notified if the
content of the note deems necessary.
§
Do not put your head
down on the table unless you are sick. If you are ill, arrangements will be made
to contact the office and let you rest there.

Come to class each day
prepared and ready to be challenged!
·
Be engaged in learning.
·
Be responsible and
organized with note taking and class assignments.
·
Make up work missed
from excused absences in the time allowed.
·
DURING READING PERIOD (Tuesday – Friday 9:25-9:55am)
o Bring appropriate reading materials every day to
read.
o Do not use the reading time to do homework.
o Do not use music devices or cell phones for any
reason.
o Do not put your head down on the desk or use the time
to sleep.
o Seattle Times newspapers will be available to read.
ATTENDANCE POLICY

Tardy Policy:

A student is tardy when
they are not in the classroom when the tardy bell rings.
·
For a tardy to be
excused, the student must have a note from a teacher, counselor or
administrator.
Excused tardies will not count against the student or
their grade in class.
Unexcused Tardies:
1-5
Tardies =Students will lose one
participation point per tardy, no action required.

Students are
responsible for communicating to the teacher if special circumstances exist.

Each unexcused tardy
will result in the loss of one participation point (as shown below).

Students entering the
classroom 20 minutes or more into the period are considered absent according to
the school policy and will need to bring a note to school to clear the absence.
Absence Policy:
The
requirements of this course will follow school and district procedures
involving attendance:
Only students with excused absences
will be allowed to make up work / tests missed.
·
Students have 48 hours following
an absence to clear that absence through the office.
·
Unexcused absences will
result in the loss of 2 participation points (see below).
·
Students with excused
absences will not lose participation points if work is made up.
·
If absent, the student
is responsible to talk to the teacher about work missed.

Points:

points In class on time, prepared
with materials, respectful behavior.

points Tardy to class – prepared
with materials, respectful behavior.
+0 points Unexcused
absence or excused absence and does not contact teacher for work missed.

points Unwilling class participant.

points For each obscenity spoken
or gestured in class.
-10 points If
the student receives an office referral for their behavior in class with
teacher or a substitute.
